When I switched from Blackmagic cameras to Sony, I wondered if I could use the Meike lenses that I cherished on my Blackmagic cameras with my new Sony ZV-E10.

To my delight, I stumbled upon a native Sony E-mount Meike lens on Facebook Marketplace for less than $130!

Considering the Sony ZV-E10’s affordability, this combination didn’t cost much, especially compared to professional cinema cameras.

My First Impression: Meike Cinema Lens on My Sony ZV-E10

From the moment I mounted Meike Cinema Lens on Sony ZV-E10, I knew it was the perfect choice for this combination, and it certainly did not disappoint.

My go-to choice is Picture Profile 8, allowing me to shoot in glorious 4K at the highest quality.

Post-Processing Essentials for Cinematic Excellence

Post-processing becomes an indispensable part of my workflow to truly elevate the cinematic feel of my videos.

For this purpose, I rely on DaVinci Resolve, an impressive and free video editing software that offers various powerful tools for enhancing footage.

Though I wouldn’t call myself a color grading expert, I’ve honed my skills in manipulating the S-curve and various other adjustments to achieve the desired cinematic effect.

Using DaVinci Resolve, I do the following:

  1. Importing Footage: After shooting with my Sony CVE 10 and Meike lens combo, I transfer the footage to my computer and import it into DaVinci Resolve.
  2. Organizing the Timeline: Once the footage is imported, I organize it on the timeline, creating a cohesive flow that aligns with the story I want to tell.
  3. Applying Picture Profile 8 and S-Log 3: I began by applying Picture Profile 8 and S-Log 3 to the clips, just like I did during filming. This sets the foundation for the cinematic look.
  4. Manipulating the S-Curve: Here comes the creative part. I adjust the S-curve to control the highlights, shadows, and mid-tones, ensuring a well-balanced and visually engaging image.
  5. Color Grading: While I may not be an expert, I experiment with color grading to achieve the desired mood and atmosphere. I play with hues, saturation, and contrast to bring out artistic flair.
  6. Fine-Tuning Exposure: Sometimes, slight exposure adjustments can make a difference. I make sure to balance exposure across different clips to maintain consistency.
  7. Adding Film Grain: To emulate the cinematic feel further, I incorporate film grain to lend an authentic texture and vintage charm to the footage.
  8. Audio Enhancement: Cinematic videos require exceptional audio quality. I pay attention to audio levels, add background music, and eliminate any unwanted noise.
  9. Exporting the Final Cut: With all the adjustments and enhancements in place, I export the final cut in the desired format, ready to share with the world.

Through this post-processing journey in DaVinci Resolve, I’ve discovered the power of creative editing and its ability to turn ordinary footage into something truly cinematic and captivating.

Frame Rates and Shutter Angles

Understanding frame rates and shutter angles has been a game-changer for me in achieving the perfect visual effect in my videos. My choices largely depend on my location and the intended output I have in mind.

As a videographer in the US, I find that shooting at 24p with a shutter angle of one divided by 48 or one divided by 50 works wonderfully for non-slow-motion footage.

However, being in a European region, I often opt for 25p with a shutter angle of 150th, which is the standard here. It’s amazing how a slight difference in frame rate and shutter angle can impact my videos’ overall feel and aesthetics.

This nifty tool allows me to reduce the amount of light entering the camera, preventing overexposure while ensuring that my chosen frame rate and shutter angle remain intact.

The result is beautifully balanced lighting and smooth, cinematic motion that enhances the overall quality of my videos. 

Budget-Friendly ND Filters

Investing in expensive ND filters might not always be necessary. I’ve found affordable ND filters on Amazon that perform just as well as their pricier counterparts.

I haven’t noticed any significant difference in the quality, and I’m confident the viewers won’t either.

Reimagining My ZV-E10 With This Amazing Combination

Initially, my Sony ZV-E10 was intended to be my top-down camera for table shots, while my Sony A74 served as my primary all-purpose camera for photography and filming.

However, discovering the potential of using the ZV-E10 with Meike cinema lenses transformed my perspective. I realized that a budget-friendly camera with the right lenses could rival more expensive options.

Using the Sony ZV-E10 with Meike cinema lenses has reinvigorated my passion for videography. It has allowed me to produce stunning footage with a limited budget, proving creativity can outshine expensive gear.
