This table shows the PS5 GPU Specifications.

Impressive, isn’t it?

Sony launched the PS5 GPU for its Playstation 5 which allowed it to deliver brand new ways to experience games while playing on a console.

Let me give you an example, for PS5 GPU, the video game Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ has two modes of play; one is the loyalty mode which has a 4k resolution, it sets a frame rate limit of 30 FPS but allows for better graphical fidelity, as well as ray tracing.

The second is the performance mode, my personal favorite. This mode sets you on a dynamic resolution with up to 60 FPS. PS5 is Sony’s high-end gaming console graphics solution by AMD.

The features contain faster booting, 4k resolution, and 120 FPS with 120 Hz refresh rate support.

These are some big plus points on their own. The PS5 is composed of 16 GB of GDDR6 RAM, joined by an 8 core/16 threads x86-64-AMD Ryzen Zen 2 for the CPU.

Due to the PS5 GPU, several games in the PlayStation 5 run at 120 FPS. Some of them include:

  • Borderlands 3
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops
  • Destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5.

We all know, 120 FPS is an incredible performance and in all honesty, a PC’s standard GPU can’t come close to this.

What Graphics Cards Are Equivalent to PS5 GPU?

A GPU is ranked over several metrics; things such as its memory and its speed. To compare the PS5 GPU with other GPUs, I looked at its teraflops.

A teraflop is the best way to figure out how powerful a GPU is because it measures how many operations a computer is capable of performing. The PlayStation 5 GPU has 9.2 to 10.28 teraflops. These are some great numbers for a console.

The PlayStation 5 GPU has the potential power of 10.28 teraflops. However, it drops to 9.2 teraflops in real-world usage. With this in mind, the equivalent to PS5 GPU can be RX 5700 XT or RTX 2070 Super, based on the teraflop output, resolution, frame rates as well as graphical settings.

GPUs are rated over multiple factors such as their processing capacity and frame rate. There are certainly some good options for PC graphic cards.

However, A PC’s average GPU cannot accomplish what a PS5’s GPU can perform.

However, I know some PC GPUs that are equivalent to the PS5 GPU, let’s have a look at their specifications.

#1 The RX 5700 XT

AttributePS5 GPU SpecificationsRX 5700 XT Specifications
Graphical Power (Real-World Usage)9.2 Teraflops9.8 Teraflops

Memory Clock1750 MHz14 GHz

This table compares the specifications of the PS5 GPU and RX 5700 XT Graphics card.

The gaming community often debates whether the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT beats the PlayStation 5’s GPU in performance. The AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is by far the closest you can get to have an equivalent of the PS5 GPU.

RX 5700 XT has about 9.8 teraflops of computing power. Yes, a big 9.8 compared to the PS5’s 9.2 teraflops. Seems like a good match! However, the downside is this card doesn’t support the ray-tracing as the PS5 does.

#2 The RTX 2070

AttributePS5 GPU SpecificationsRX 2070 Super Specifications
Graphical Power (Real-World Usage)9.2 Teraflops9.5 Teraflops
Graphics RAM16 GB8 GB
Ray TracingSupportedSupported
ArchitectureRDNA 2.0Turing
Memory Clock1750 MHz1750 MHz

This table compares the specifications of the PS5 GPU and RX 2070 Super Graphics card.

Does the PS5 GPU reign over RTX? In my opinion, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 is the closest we can get to the PS5’s Oberon GPU.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 is a graphic card that comes with 2304 GPU cores, 448 GB/s memory bandwidth, along with 45T RTX-OPS.

The majority of PC games run on the RTX 2070 and the number of ray-tracing operations that RTX 2070 can complete in a second makes it impressive.

The RTX 2070 Graphic card has about 9.5 teraflops of GPU performance. This GPU is a safe option and future-proofed with 8GB of graphics RAM for textures and other graphical assets.

I know this seems a bit small compared to the PS5’s 16GB RAM, but be mindful of the fact that games only have access to about 12GB of that 16GB RAM Pool.

Besides that, PCs often have a separate pool of RAM known as the system RAM. So the GPU’s RAM is just used for its graphics while on the other hand, a PC5’s is a shared RAM.

Safe to say it makes an incredible alternative for a PC GPU as an equivalent to PS5 GPU.

PS5 Graphics Card vs. PC Graphics Cards

Since the GPU inside a PC is not just made for gaming. You can do a lot more in that GPU, ranging from photo editing to video editing.

Plus if you are a graphic designer, you would need that extra power of a good GPU for your 3D graphics rendering. If you are into machine learning, you need a good GPU as well.

My point is that a PC’s GPU can be used to do a lot more things other than gaming. This is why PC GPUs cost more than only a console.

On the other hand, the GPU inside the Playstation 5 is highly-designed for gaming purposes and power efficiency. The PS5 developers optimize their games according to the console for a better experience.

This means the gaming experience on the PS5 is much better in some games based on the cinematic experience as compared to a PC.

Even though the PlayStation 5’s GPU is equivalent to the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and RTX 2070 Super, it isn’t going to be more powerful in most games because of the way a console is designed for games.

How Does the PS5 Graphics Card Compare in The Real World?

Ever since Playstation 5 launched in 2020, it has undoubtedly become the most popular gaming console in the world because of its impressive graphics, breathtaking immersion, and lightning-fast speed. Not to mention its lifelike gaming experience with a 4K resolution and ray tracing.

However, even though the PS5 supports 4K gaming with up to 120 FPS, it’s still up to the game developers to decide how they want to optimize the game. Hence, one game might run at 4K 60 FPS, whereas another might run at 1080p 120 FPS.

In PS5, some of the game developers give you the option to run the games at a much higher resolution along with lower frame rates or a lower resolution and a higher frame rate.

Most settings are fixed and optimized to the PlayStation 5. Only sometimes, you can see an option to turn the settings up to high or ultra on a PC.

With that being said, you can play a game at 4K 30 FPS on a PS5, while on a PC the target is to hit 60 FPS to get a smooth gaming experience.

This is why you need powerful graphic cards on a PC to run games at 4K 60 FPS as compared to the PlayStation 5.

The following is a table showing how well the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and the Nvidia RTX 2070 Super can run different games as compared to the PS5 at 4K.

TitlesPS5AMD Radeon RX 5700 XTNvidia RTX 2070 Super

Far Cry 530 FPS52 FPS54 FPS
Battlefield 160 FPS74 FPS73 FPS
The Witcher 330 FPS49 FPS55 FPS

Data from Eurogamer.net

Judging by the above table, it is safe to say that both the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT and Nvidia RTX 2070 Super are able to run these games at the max setting.

The setting can be reduced in order to obtain better performance from these graphic cards.
