Features
Compact Size
The Velbon Ultra Stick Super 8 is one of the most compact monopods out in the market today, measuring a measly 26 cm (in its closed form). Other monopods usually have an issue with being too difficult to carry due to their carrying size, but the Ultra Stick Super 8 gives the user a fair advantage in this aspect.
When shooting outdoors, especially when I plan on carrying light, the Ultra Stick monopod comes up as the best contender. It is so compact that, at times it’s not even a challenge to put this in my jeans pocket as I pop it in quickly after use.

Moreover, even if the Velbon Ultra Stick is not carried in a case but is just hanging by hand or my belt, due to its small size, it does not hamper my movements while walking, trekking, sitting, or any free-hand usage.
Its little size conceals a lot more than just beautiful looks.
Manufacturing
The Velbon Ultra Lock Super 8 is made up of a lightweight aluminum type material which makes it super easy to carry around everywhere.
It comes with a standard quarter-inch (¼”) thread at the top, which supports most of the industrial devices out there. I, of course, used mine with a ULANZI Falcam F38 quick-release plate.

Velbon’s revolutionary twist-lock Trunnion Shaft System (TSS) is used in the Ultra Stick Super 8, an 8-section monopod. It can be stretched and locked at any point between its closed and extended states with ease and speed.
The Velbon Ultra Stick has a handgrip that is fairly big and chunky, making it easier to wrap my fingers around while at the same time holding my shooting device steady.
The length of the grip is designed such that I can grab the monopod with both hands and still feel as easy while holding it.
The rubber at the bottom gives the Ultra Stick Super 8 excellent traction when placed on the ground.
While keeping it anchored in one position, I can move the monopod in different directions at will, and it will not slip up.
Ease of Use
The Ultra Stick 8 is one of the most user-friendly monopods available. Its quick assembly is ideal for scenarios that change frequently, such as high mobility shooting for sports or shooting in a fluctuating environment, such as wildlife photography inside forests or foothills.
To use it, simply twist the bottom end in an anti-clockwise direction a few times, and all monopod pieces will be freed quickly.
To lock it in place, simply twist it clockwise after it has opened to the desired height.
It has a rapid collapse mechanism that allows you to close the monopod quickly after use. It can be retracted without the use of any complicated locking devices.
Another advantage of this twist and lock system is that it can be locked anywhere along the leg’s length.
Locking it at the proper interval does not need any additional effort.
The Velbon monopod’s shape makes it a good alternative for circumstances where you need to shoot over your head.
Its lightweight ensures that the equipment in use feels exactly perfect.
Some Interesting Aspects
Here are some interesting aspects that make this product shine:
- Since it is a monopod with lightweight features, it is very ergonomically designed, giving it a casual look when carrying around outside. You will not feel awkward or uncomfortable in crowds as you carry this along.
- Even if it is just hanging by my belt or being held in my hand, it gives a fashionable appearance when looked at.
- When trekking or nature-walking, while not in use, with the help of Ultra Stick Monopod’s slick grip, you can also double it as a walking stick.
Points to Note
When using the Ultra Stick, some useful points to keep in mind are listed below:
- Once the required height is adjusted, make sure to lock both the bottom knob and the first knob (the one right below the grip) tightly so that it does not collapse while in use.
- It is observed that, at times lack of proper know-how leads to expensive accidents.
- Sometimes monopods tend to get loose over time, but this can be avoided once you get used to operating it properly.
- In case of any confusion, watch professionals online or visit your nearest photography shop to seek guidance.
- Observe the surroundings before operating the Velbon Ultra Stick. Only open in vertical positions below your eye level or in an environment that is not congested.
- Awareness of our surroundings and Environmental Safety always comes first!
Pros
- The Velbon Ultra Stick is extremely light in weight. This provides less burden on the arm while in use, regardless of whether the user is mobile or stationary.
- Its Sleek design gives it greater handling, while its sturdy grip allows freedom of operation single-handedly and even while using both hands.
- As compared to other monopods in the market, Velbon’s innovative design allows for compacted dimensions when closed while giving greater usable height when fully extended.
- With instant locking and unlocking using a twist mechanism, it is, without a doubt, among the easiest monopods to operate.
- Great for sports shots and wildlife photography in all kinds of rugged and non-rugged conventional environments.
- The Ultra Stick is ideal for moving subjects while using DSLR and Mirrorless camera models.
- Adjustable leg locks on the Velbon allow for variable positions to shoot from as required.
- Easy to carry while on the go. I found that the compact size allows it to fit in most wearable pockets and carry bags. This solves the problem of taking in additional equipment cases when one wants to casually go for a shoot.
Cons
- I found out that in its closed form, the foam grip for the Velbon Ultra Stick, just above the rubber bottom, starts to shred over time.
It is therefore recommended to use the rubber lock and not use the foam too often when collapsing or retracting the monopod for use. - Not supportive of weight greater than 3.0 Kg (5.0 Kg as per official Velbon website). This restricts it to entry-level DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras. Meaning those high-end telephoto lenses are a big no while using the Super 8 monopod.
- The leg-locks themselves are quite stiff and require some practice for smooth usage.
Conclusion
Despite its cons, the Velbon Ultra Stick Super 8 Monopod is a gem, and I want to retain it for a long time as part of my collection. This monopod is a winner because of its size and sturdy, ease of access features which will amaze you for a long time.
As a camera stand, this tiny beast is of exceptional quality, and I’m pleased with it. After all, you must consider your requirements, budget, and expectations before selecting a system that meets your needs.
Because it is so light and small, you can take it anywhere without worrying about space or baggage limitations.
Overall, as a camera enthusiast and someone who is often on the go, I would definitely recommend this gear to everyone.
