Best Budget Lens for BMPCC4K » $69 « (My Experience)

By in Lenses

I realize that budget is a word, which means different things for different people.

By budget in this case – i mean: Cheap

This post is the best value vs. money lenses that I have personally tried.

I cant pick one – I am going to pick two.

These lenses, and the lens picks are also valid for the OG. The Original BMPCC from 2013 (i love & hate that thing)

My Favourite Lens under $100 for BMPCC4K

At the first place I have the Meike 35mm F1.7 Manual Focus Prime Lens at ony it makes not sense to me, how good this pairs with the BMPCC4K

Both the Meike Cinema lens (read my review) and this dirt cheap lens, is one of the reasons i think the BMPCC4K is much better than the BMPCC6K

Different versions of the lens

This lens is in differient variants, which should be the exact same value

I have not tried them all personally.

By all senses, these lenses should be somewhat the same. Check out the 1.4 mm – Incredible bokeh and low light performance at less than $100 – insane.

Top 6 Reasons i love the Meike 35mm f/1.7

#1 Its soo tiny

So’. This is actually good and bad.

For obvious reasons, its nice with a tiny lens, that not heavy, and easy to get around.

But it makes it very jittery and does nok make you look very pro.

#2 Surprisingly great picture quality.

I know that people are snobby about perfect picture quality, but to my eyes, this quality with the BMPCC4K is great.

It is not the lack of image quality that bothers me, and I guess if you are looking for a budget lens. This won’t bother you either.

#3 Easy to focus

Even though the lens is small, it is actually surprisingly easy to rack focus on it. But the downside is, that it is almost impossible to keep steady while you are focusing.

I guess it MIGHT be possible to attach a focus-puller with some sort of contraption. I know that people are 3D-printing focus rings etc.

If you are able to do this, this would be great on a gimbal. – But maybe the aperture ring, will make this quite hard for you?

#4 Manual Aperture ring

I like that you can adjust the aperture outside, and not via the software in the BMPCC4K – it reminds me of the cinema lenses.

#5 Does not feel cheap

The lens is made of metal, and does not feel cheap at all.

If you compare it to the Panasonic Lumix G Vario 12-2mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH which is made of plastic. This lens feels very solid.

#6 It is DIRT cheap

Like seriously. $69 as of right now?

If you don’t like it, you can just re-sell it and you’ve only lost like $40 or so.

Nice extra lens.

My Absolut #1 pick lens(es) for BMPCC4K

By all accounts my first pick for BMPCC4K.

If you met me, and asked me – what is the best lens to get for BMPCC4K? i’d say to buy the Native MFT Cinema Lenses from Meike in the focal length you desire.

My YouTube channel is packed with videos from using this lens. Mostly the 25 mm, both with the BMPCC 4K and the Original BMPCC (the OG)

You can go to my blogpost about this lens, or just watch a short version of it here:

This lens is a part of a Cinema Lens Set.

I own 2 of these – i can personally say, they are the exact same quality.

Here is the complete set.

All the lenses I have ever tried with BMPCC & BMCC4K

Most of these lenses, I still own and use. Some i’ve sold.

LensPriceValue
Meike 35mm F1.7 Manual Focus Prime Lens⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Meike 25mm T2.2 Cinema Lens$319.99⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Meike 12mm T2.2 Cinmea Lens$319.99⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Panasonic Lumix G Vario 12-2mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH$127.12⭐⭐⭐
Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 12-100 F4.0 PRO IS$889.95
Meike 35MM T2.1 S35 Cinema Lens
+ Metabones Canon EF Lens to MFT Speed Booster
$519.99
+ $649.00
⭐⭐

As you can see on the list – I’ve put my Super35 (S35) version of the Meike lens further down.

This is in no sense because it is worse.

Not even close.

But take a look at the price !!

For the price of the S35 lens and a speedbooster, you can buy an entire set of the the MFT Native Cinema Lenses. Which is why I think the Value for Money is just not as good.

The lens that still haunts my wallet

Another controversial opinion was that i simply did not like the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital 12-100 F4.0 PRO IS

The lens wasnt’ for me – and the comments on Youtube is on fire 🔥 – from people saying that i am wrong.

But i stand by my opinion, and I think they are touched by confirmation bias, whereas i was struck by buyers remorse.

I re-sold the lens, and took a loss of about 40% which is more than a Native MFT Lens from Meike.

I stand by the fact – The Olympus all-in-one lens, is just way too expensive for BMPCC4K

If you support this – please join me in the comments track 🙂

If you want me to try another budget lens, I hope to see you in the comments on YouTube.

Great versatile beginner lens with “focus”

If you bought the BMPCC4K and you are not comfortable with pulling focus yet, and just want to point and shoot.

Maybe you are bringing the Blackmagic 4K on a trip or holiday, and want to keep it at a minimum size, and then want to point and focus.

This lens is an “autofocus” lens, which is quite good.

The Panasonic Lumix G Vario 12-2mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH at $127.12 is a very cheap zoom lens.

The best thing about this lens: It is stabilized!

The problem with this, can be the value also – its an autofocus lens.

Which is not that great paired with the BMPCC4K because as we know – the BMPCC cameras are not Autofocus.

But they actually do have a focus button. That focus’s for you when you press it, and point to your subject. I found that it works quite well, when you are outside, which makes this lens great for traveling.

The small footprint and the range of 12-32 mm is quite handy.
